BETHLEHEM STEEL CORPORATION, SPARROWS POINT YARD, AWARDED CONTRACT BY THE U.S. MARITIME ADMINISTRATION

SPARROWS POINT, Md., Dec. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Bethlehem Steel Corporation's (NYSE: BS) BethShip, Sparrows Point Yard, was awarded a contract late yesterday by the U.S. Maritime Administration for work on three roll-on/roll-off vessels acquired to upgrade its Ready Reserve Fleet, announced David Watson, president of the shipyard.
The contract, in excess of $33.7 million, calls for activation upgrades, modifications, repairs, sea trials and deactivation of the Cape Rise, Cape Ray and Cape Race, formerly the Saudi Riyadh, Saudi Makkah and the G&C Admiral, respectively.
Watson said, "This contract should enable us to maintain the current work force of about 1,000 employees through May 1994. The first vessel is scheduled to arrive in January, followed by the second and third vessel in two-week increments. The reflagging work will require 120 days per vessel."
Watson explained that the vessels will be reflagged to U.S. Flag, U.S. Coast Guard and American Bureau of Shipping regulations. In addition, the yard will perform general repairs and upgrades on the vessels to accommodate U.S. Army military equipment. The contact also includes several options, which, if exercised, would increase the contract value to $45.3 million.
The yard is currently completing work on five vessels. Two ready reserve vessels -- the Cape Washington and Cape Wrath -- are undergoing reflagging and general repairs and refurbishments. A third Ready Reserve vessel, the G.T.S. Callaghan, is undergoing general repairs. The Dolphin Lines' cruise ship S.S. Seabreeze and Union Carbide and Chemical Corporation's Chemical Pioneer, operated by Marine Transport Lines, are undergoing drydocking, general repairs and cargo-tank painting.
