BETHLEHEM STEEL AND USWA TO COMMENCE CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS

BETHLEHEM, Pa., May 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Representatives of the United Steelworkers of America (USWA) and Bethlehem Steel Corporation (NYSE: BS) announced today that they will commence negotiations aimed at reaching a prompt settlement on a 1993 labor contract.
Negotiations will begin on June 8.
John H. Reck, chairman of the United Steelworkers Negotiating Committee, and John L. Kluttz, chairman of the Bethlehem Steel Corporation Negotiating Committee, said they "will work toward a longer- term agreement and expect to achieve a timely, mutually satisfactory settlement."
They acknowledged that their recent, successful negotiations to establish separate labor agreements at Bethlehem's Pennsylvania Steel Technologies, Inc., subsidiary and Structural Products, BethForge and CENTEC divisions had somewhat delayed the start of these negotiations which cover Bethlehem's flat-rolled business units at Sparrows Point, Md., and Burns Harbor, Ind. They expressed confidence that this earlier work and the successful outcome of these recent negotiations would facilitate a timely conclusion of this next round of bargaining. They further noted that neither a strike nor a lockout had occurred at Bethlehem's basic steel plants since 1959. Since that time, agreement on a new labor pact has been reached well before expiration of the current labor agreement.
The present contract expires on July 31.
