BEST WESTERN LEADING INDUSTRY RESURGENCE

PHOENIX, Dec. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Record numbers in nearly every category place Best Western International in the vanguard of the long- anticipated boom in the lodging industry.
Best Western's performance figures for fiscal '93, released this week, are the strongest in the corporation's 47-year history. They also support predictions by industry leaders that 1993 would mark the beginning of a resurgence for the hospitality industry, said Best Western President and Chief Executive Officer Ron Evans.
Gross room sales for the global chain were a record $712 million, up nearly 4 percent over last year and more than double the sales in 1983. Room nights sold for fiscal '93 were up nearly 4.5 percent to 10.7 million, also a Best Western record.
Leading the record-breaking performance figures, however, was the call volume to Best Western's reservations centers in Wichita, Kan., and its headquarters city of Phoenix. The volume this year was nearly 9.9 million calls, up 6.3 percent from last year's record.
The two reservations centers also registered 16 record-setting days this year, including Aug. 5, when nearly 58,000 people called Best Western's toll-free reservations telephone number, an all-time, single- day Best Western call volume record.
"North Americans rediscovered the joy of travel this summer and selected Best Western as their hotel because of good value, service and quality," added Evans.
Founded in 1946, Best Western is the world's largest lodging chain with nearly 3,400 independently owned and operated properties in 51 countries throughout North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Israel, the Middle East and the South Pacific.
