LAST WINTER MADE FOR LEAN TIMES as far as lesbians on screen go. Most of the beefy roles for real-life dykes have been waylaid (Ellen's sitcom has been pushed back yet again), and finding a worthwhile lesbian feature film -- amidst the sea of the penis-angst flicks -- was virtually impossible. There was some great chemistry in films, including gay films (Nico and Dani) and somber dramas (witness Don Cheadle and Luis Guzman in Traffic), but little of the camaraderie was Sapphic, or even female, in nature.

The season's few foreign films featuring lesbians -- Russia's His Wife's Diary and Germany's Unknown Friend -- are unlikely to hit mainstream theaters in the United States. Fortunately, lesbians continued to crop up in supporting roles -- on the big screen and television -- sometimes lending the most interesting characters to otherwise tepid mainstream flicks.
