BEST OF THE BUNCH; Gardens.

GAULTHERIA PROCUMBENS Also known as wintergreen, these creeping shrubs are fantastic for winter containers, combining well with skimmias, winter heathers and ivy. They are also great for using as ground cover under shrubs in gardens with acid soil.

A low, spreading evergreen with underground stems and glossy, dark green leaves - which smell of wintergreen when crushed - it grows to around 15cmx1m (6inx3ft), producing bright red gobstopper-like berries. It produces clusters of insignificant small white flowers earlier in the season. Wintergreen is also excellent for providing ground cover in damp woodland or shady borders.
