BEST BUY REPORTS DECEMBER SALES AND EXPANDED SONY DISTRIBUTION

 MINNEAPOLIS, Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Best Buy Co., Inc. (NYSE: BBY), today reported sales for December 1992, a five-week period ended Jan. 2, and the 10th period of its 1993 year.
 According to Allen Lenzmeier, chief financial officer, December 1992 sales of $330 million were 77 percent more than the $186 million achieved for the comparable five-week period last year. Year-to-date (44 weeks) sales of $1.34 billion represent a 73 percent increase, as compared to $776 million last year.
 Comparable store sales increased 13 percent for December 1992, and have increased 19 percent year-to-date. The company currently operates 111 locations, 63 of which are considered comparable in December.
 In December, the company added one location in Clear Lake, Texas, which is part of the Houston market. This brings the total stores operated in Houston to six and a total of 26 in the state of Texas.
 Sony Corp. has approved full-line distribution and sale of its products in all Best Buy's Chicago locations consistent with the company's other stores through its 14-state marketing area. Rollout dates for Sony products in Chicago are scheduled for the first calendar quarter of 1993.
 The company also anticipates the announcement of new franchisements with major computer vendors in the first quarter of 1993. The entire home office business group has been Best Buy's fastest growing sector this year.
