BERTACCINI NAMED CHIEF QUALITY OFFICER AT AT&T; HANLEY PROMOTED

NEW YORK, Jan. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Kenneth M. Bertaccini, president and chief executive officer of AT&T Consumer Products since 1986, will become senior vice president and chief quality officer of AT&T (NYSE: T) effective Feb. 1.
In this new position, Bertaccini will be responsible for supporting AT&T's senior management in continuing to bring every part of the company to a world class level of quality.
Two AT&T business units -- AT&T Transmission Systems, a unit of AT&T Network Systems, and AT&T Universal Card Services -- received Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Awards in 1992. AT&T is the first company ever to receive two Malcolm Baldrige awards.
"Proud as we are of the recognition we have received for quality, it seems to me that this is the time to raise the bar and set still higher quality goals," said Robert E. Allen, AT&T chairman. "In establishing this new position and assigning to it the head of one of our most successful businesses and someone with long experience in operations, I can send no stronger signal to the rest of the company that our quality efforts are just beginning.
"I look to Ken to bring to this new senior position the same leadership he exercised in helping turn Consumer Products into a profitable business recognized in the industry for its quality leadership, as well as its market leadership," Allen said.
Bertaccini began his business career in 1968 with Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company. He served in a variety of marketing positions in that company and AT&T until 1983, when he joined AT&T Information Systems as vice president, Pacific region. He became vice president of marketing in AT&T's General Business Systems in 1984, and moved to AT&T Consumer Products as vice president for operations later that year. He assumed responsibility for the total Consumer Products business unit on Dec. 1, 1986.
John Hanley, currently diversified products group vice president at AT&T Consumer Products, will assume interim responsibilities as president of that unit until a permanent replacement for Bertaccini is named. In the meantime, Hanley is being promoted to vice president, operations for AT&T Consumer Products.
In his current position at Consumer Products, Hanley is in charge of developing new businesses and globally expanding the company's existing consumer products businesses. He directly supports strategic business units responsible for visual communications, cellular telephones, Smart Phone Systems products and security systems. Hanley played a key role in the development of the AT&T VideoPhone 2500.
AT&T Consumer Products, headquartered in Parsippany, N.J., is a multibillion-dollar business with nearly 14,000 people worldwide. It designs, manufactures, sells and leases communications products globally for personal use within and outside the home. Its products -- including corded and cordless phones, answering systems, video products, cellular telephones and the first personal communicator -- are sold through AT&T Phone Centers and other retail outlets throughout the United States and through distributors and resellers internationally.
