THE Hatton Garden gang may have carried out a similarly audacious burglary in Germany two years ago using specialist drills.
Thieves targeted 294 safety deposit boxes at the Volksbank in Steglitz, Berlin, in January 2013. They dug a 45-metre tunnel and drilled through almost a metre of reinforced concrete to reach the loot.
Diamonds, gold and silver worth PS8.3million were taken and the offenders were never caught.
Ex-Flying Squad detective Jim Dickie said: "The modus operandi is very similar and there will only be a number of criminal gangs who have the audacity and the knowledge to carry out these sorts of crime."
He added he had little doubt that British detectives would be liaising with German officers.
