The article ["The Litde College on the Hill," November/December 2018] was a fitting tribute to the contribution George Edgcumbe made to education in Benton Harbor. I would like to add that his legacy continued through his nephew Sidney C. Mitchell. At the age of five, Sidney was sent by his parents from Cobourg, Ontario, to Benton Harbor to be raised by Dr. Edgcumbe and his wife. Sidney attended Benton Harbor College and later obtained degrees from Eastern Michigan University and the University of Michigan. He served as Benton Harbor's superintendent of schools from 1923 to 1957. During that time, Sidney founded Benton Harbor Community College, which has become Lake Michigan College.
