BEN FRANKLIN RETAIL STORES, INC. REPORTS SAME STORE SALES FOR THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY

CAROL STREAM, Ill., March 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Ben Franklin Retail Stores, Inc. (Nasdaq: BFRS) wholly-owned subsidiary Ben Franklin Crafts, Inc. which currently owns and operates 41 Ben Franklin Craft Superstores, today reported year-to-date retail sales of $56.5 million for the current fiscal year. This reflects an increase of 38.3 percent over the prior year's sales of $40.8 million. Same-store sales for the year-to-date, which include 28 Craft Superstores, have decreased 7.8 percent.

Retail sales for the month of February increased 26.6 percent to $5.2 million from $4.1 million in the prior year. Same store sales were flat for the month of February. In January 1996, the Company announced that it would close up to 8 of its Company-owned and operated Craft Superstores. February same store sales results reflect, in part, increased sales from stores which are in the process of being closed.

Ben Franklin Crafts owns and operates 41 Craft Superstores, which are expanded format, full service stores providing craft products and craft classes for their customers. Ben Franklin Retail Stores, Inc. is a franchisor to more than 300 craft stores, including Craft Superstores, and more than 540 variety stores, and wholesaler to holders of over 700 merchandise agreements throughout the United States and internationally. The Company is headquartered in Carol Stream, Illinois.
