BEN & JERRY'S COMES TO SEATTLE; HEAD OF PR AND MARKETING TELLS IABC THE SWEET SECRETS OF SUCCESS

SEATTLE, Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Few in the Seattle area haven't indulged in Ben & Jerry's wild gourmet ice cream and yogurt flavors -- and few have missed their message of social progress. Mitch Curren, Ben & Jerry's self-titled "PR Info Queen," visits Seattle and the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Nov. 9 at Kayak Lakefront Grill to explain how public relations and communications are key to this multi-million dollar international company's success.
The 16-year-old Vermont firm's approach has been a playful, caring one. "We're honest, and people respond to that almost as enthusiastically as our products," says Curren. Company founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenwood insisted that the growth of the company be based on having fun.
In 1993, "fun" is offering ice cream specials to Vermont towns during freezing weather and reaching out to inner-city homeless by providing jobs in a Harlem ice cream shop -- two very different definitions. "Social responsibility is one part of our three-part mission," says Curren, "including economics (being financially stable) and being product conscious (providing innovation and quality). All three parts hold equal value in the eyes of the company."
Anyone that wishes to attend this presentation can register for the IABC luncheon at 206-623-8632 by Nov. 5.
Communications the Ben & Jerry's Way
Following the luncheon, Mitch Curren will present a seminar detailing ways in which Ben & Jerry's communicates the company's three-part mission: economic, product and social. How for example is the economic reconciled with the social? What flare-ups occur? How are they ironed-out?
Curren will explain how videos, newsletters and team meetings are used throughout the company's three factories to attain the good results and happy employees Ben & Jerry's has become famous for. Cost for IABC members is $25, and for non-members, $50. To register call 206-623-8632, by Nov. 5.
