BELOIT CORPORATION AWARDED $17.2 MILLION IN PATENT INFRINGEMENT SUIT

MILWAUKEE, May 25 /PRNewswire/ -- A federal court jury awarded Beloit Corporation $17.2 million following a patent infringement trial against J.M. Voith GmbH and its subsidiary, Voith, Inc. before Federal Judge Barbara B. Crabb in Madison, Wis. The verdict, which is believed to be one of the larger awards ever returned in Wisconsin, was returned on Friday, May 21, following a three week trial. Beloit Corporation, a subsidiary of Harnischfeger Industries, Inc. (NYSE: HPH), had accused Voith of infringing patents held by Beloit on its revolutionary new Bel- Champ(TM) technology for the drying section of large paper manufacturing machines. The jury had on May 14 determined the Beloit's patents were valid and infringed by Voith in connection with Voith's sale of a paper machine dryer section to Consolidated Papers of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., The jury returned for a one week trial on the issue of damages.
John McKay, chief executive officer of Beloit Corporation, stated, "We are gratified by the jury's recognition of the losses we suffered by virtue of the sale in question. As the technological leaders in the paper machine industry, we are confident the amount of the verdict will act as a deterrent to others who would attempt to sell or use Beloit's inventions." McKay noted that Beloit is nearing completion of a $25 million state-of-the-art demonstration paper machine which will showcase new technologies of the type considered by the jury, stating "the jury's verdict further strengthens our resolve to continue substantial investments in new paper machine technology."
Harnischfeger Industries is a diversified international holding company that operates four subsidiaries involved in: papermaking machinery manufacturing (Beloit Corporation); surface mining and overhead material handling manufacturing (Harnischfeger Corporation); and systems integration services (Harnischfeger Engineers, Inc. and Syscon Corporation).
