BELLSOUTH TO REDUCE WORKFORCE BY 8,000
ATLANTA, Nov. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- BellSouth Corporation (NYSE: BLS)

said today that it expects to reduce its workforce in its nine-state telecommunications unit by some 8,000 employees by 1996.
In addition, BellSouth also announced the prospective merger of the headquarters staff of its BellSouth Enterprises business unit with its corporate staff, scheduled for early 1993. The resulting staff will be reduced, and appropriate centralized functions will be transferred to specific business units.
Force reductions in the corporation's telecommunications unit will be tied to a series of studies that will examine basic work processes with the intent of streamlining operations and improving service.
Already identified for elimination over the next six to 24 months are some 825 jobs in the company's comptrollers organization and about 150 involved in economic analysis and forecasting across the nine states.
BellSouth Telecommunications expects attrition to account for a substantial number of the jobs eliminated. No universal early retirement offer is planned for managers. Instead, targeted offers will be made to managers as needed.
According to John Clendenin, BellSouth chairman and chief executive officer, "These latest moves are a part of our ongoing effort to maintain our competitive position in the rapidly changing marketplace while continuing to provide our customers quality service."
BellSouth is an international telecommunications holding company. Its subsidiaries offer local telephone service in nine southeastern states and mobile communications services worldwide, provide advertising and publishing services, and market and maintain stand-alone and fully integrated communications systems.
