BELLSOUTH STRENGTHENS OPTICAL DATA PORTFOLIO.

BellSouth (NYSE: BLS) has strengthened its data portfolio by extending BellSouth's high-speed metropolitan (metro) Ethernet service to businesses, schools and government agencies in North Carolina and Florida.

With speeds up to 1 Gbps, Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) can transmit data 651 times faster than a traditional T1 data line, enabling the download of an entire motion picture in 3.5 seconds. Gigabit Ethernet allows all users on a corporate network to share massive amounts of bandwidth, and enables bandwidth-intensive applications such as voice over IP streaming video, off-site data management and multi-media applications.

Industry analysts and recent market research depict a dramatic increase in end-user metro data consumption over the next four years. A recent report issued by Infonetics Research shows a 552% growth rate for metro data products and estimates customers in the United States and Canada will increase spending from $420 million to $2.7 billion between 2002 and 2006.

"As more and more companies employ IP data transport and utilize bandwidth-intensive applications to build cutting-edge communications networks, BellSouth continues to capitalize on the power of our expansive fiber-based network to provide businesses and institutions with innovative metro data networking solutions," said Mark Kaish, vice president of BellSouth Data Services. "BellSouth will continue its focus on the deployment of solutions that customers need to enable innovative high-speed applications and deliver mission-critical data."

BellSouth's metro Ethernet services provide customers with a clear migration path to the next generation of data networking while maintaining the Ethernet protocol, which has become the Local Area Network standard protocol. Gigabit Ethernet service enhances BellSouth's metro Ethernet portfolio.

After researching several options that would allow IBM to employ high-speed access across multiple locations, IBM deployed a BellSouth Gigabit Ethernet solution that supports IP traffic between two of its Atlanta sites. The IBM solution uses a single GigE connection that enables transmission of high volumes of proprietary IP traffic between these sites.

"What intrigued us about the Gigabit Ethernet solution was BellSouth's ability to transmit large volumes of IP data between our two Atlanta locations," said Tom Ready, director, IBM Network Services. "Another advantage of GigE is the ease in which it is integrated into our current network structure, allowing us to slowly build on our existing platform. This evolutionary process enables us to expand our optical capabilities without completely overhauling our current infrastructure."

GigE is the next evolution of BellSouth's fiber-based metro Ethernet data portfolio. Gigabit Ethernet's next-generation optical technology further exploits the power of BellSouth's expansive optical network, enabling companies to capitalize on a cost-effective data solution that provides 10 times the bandwidth of Fast Ethernet services at approximately twice the price.

By leveraging the most expansive fiber optic network in the world and its long history of deploying metro data solutions, BellSouth is enabling schools, government agencies, healthcare organizations and enterprise customers to capitalize on innovative, bandwidth-intensive applications such as:

-- Distance Learning - Enables thousands of students to download bandwidth intensive applications, including streaming video, to the desk-top.

-- Metropolitan Area Networking (MAN)- Allows large government agencies to interconnect with state and municipal offices, research facilities and educational institutions, therefore centralizing services, database systems and other resources.

-- Data Backup and Restore - Provides bandwidth needed to effectively back up large volumes of data at an offsite location and the IP backbone needed to unify geographically diverse employees in a common virtual LAN environment.

-- e-Health Initiatives - Streamlines operations and improves patient services by facilitating online processing of daily functions such as physician scheduling, prescriptions, pharmacy supply chains and the transmission of standardized electronic medical records, as well as telemedicine and imaging records.

-- Unified Networks - Converges video, voice and IP-based data networks, allowing enterprises to carry multimedia applications more efficiently than separate facilities. Unifying networks improves reliability and resource usage while reducing administration costs.

With speeds up to 1,000 Mbps, GigE can send a 10,000 page novel to the moon in less than 1.3 seconds. A movie that would take 18 hours to download via a 56K modem, can be transferred in 27 minutes using a DSL connection. GigE can download that same movie in just 3.5 seconds.

Customers may choose a point-to-point connection or a switched connection where several locations may interconnect and interoperate at any speed available from 1.5 Mbps to 1 Gbps. Both point-to-point and switched connection customers benefit from 24X7 service management and monitoring by BellSouth. BellSouth's metro Ethernet services are available throughout the company's nine-state region. The services are offered with Gigabit speed in the Atlanta, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Daytona Beach, Gainesville, Jacksonville, Orlando, Panama City, Boca Raton, Ft. Pierce, Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro and Winston-Salem markets.
