BELLSOUTH STATEMENT ON BELL ATLANTIC MERGER

WASHINGTON, D.C., Oct. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The following statement was issued today by BellSouth:
"We consider Bell Atlantic's decision to merge with Tele- Communications Inc. and Liberty Media Corporation a further confirmation of an idea we've been trying to communicate for some time about the natural relationships that exist between cable and broadcast, telephone and cable, and telephone and computer. Today's announcement further authenticates that idea and demonstrates how technology and the marketplace will continue to push these mergers.
BellSouth too, moving in a similar direction, today announced an agreement with Prime Management Company to form an innovative partnership to pursue interactive television and related multimedia opportunities. Through this partnership, BellSouth and Prime Management will have the ability to offer services such as interactive television, pay-per-view, traditional cable television and alternative telecommunications for business and residential customers.
Hopefully as mergers and partnerships such as these continue we will learn more about how to best create a competitive telecommunications marketplace which will be healthy not only for associated industries but also for consumers and the U.S. economy as a whole.
