BELLSOUTH ROLLS OUT PRIMARY RATE ISDN REGION-WIDE

ATLANTA, Feb. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- On Jan. 25, BellSouth Telecommunications became the first RBOC to offer Primary Rate ISDN region-wide.
Tariffs for MegaLink(R) ISDN, BellSouth's product name for Primary Rate ISDN, have been filed and approved in each of the nine states it serves.
"MegaLink ISDN provides a flexible, high-capacity interface to the public switched network bringing advanced intelligence to the PBX station user's desktop," said Dwight Rice, product manager - MegaLink ISDN for BellSouth Telecommunications. "It is a very cost effective means for handling a customer's growth or other communications needs."
According to Rice, the primary advantage of MegaLink ISDN is that it provides integration of multiple voice and data transmission channels on the same line. Several call types such as Direct Inward Dialing (DID), Direct Outward Dialing (DOD), INWATS, OUTWATS or two-way calls can be handled on any available channel which reduces the number of trunks required. Previously, a dedicated trunk group was required for each call type.
Brookwood Hospital in Birmingham, Ala., recognized these efficiencies and installed 12 MegaLink ISDN lines, one of the largest installations in the country. "MegaLink ISDN is great. We're excited about the feature transparency it gives us to remote sites and it's saving us money," said Carol Maddox, manager of communications for Brookwood Hospital. "It also positions us to take advantage of future ISDN offerings."
The Primary Rate Interface provides multiplexing to support 23 B-channels (64 Kbps) and one D-channel (64 Kbps) for signaling. Although MegaLink ISDN is electrically and physically identical to T1 service, it is functionally superior to T1 due to the Intelligent network capabilities possible through the D-channel.
The most common use of MegaLink ISDN is expected to be a Central Office (CO) to PBX interface because the D-channel signaling provides faster call set up and more information about the call. Other applications will include video conferencing, LAN-to-LAN interconnection and wide area voice/data communications networks.
An optional Calling Line Identification feature (CLID) is available and offers many advantages. It will allow customers to improve the efficiency of handling incoming calls. CLID may be used to index a database attached to the PBX so that account information for the calling customer can be displayed to the attendant as the call is received, thereby reducing the attendant's average call work time.
CLID also reduces or eliminates the need for auto-callback equipment in dial-up computer applications. CLID could also add security by reducing the number of obscene or annoying phone calls.
"Everyone loves CLID," added Maddox. "It gives security a tool to use against harassing and threatening phone calls. It even saved a life right after it was installed when the emergency room received a call and was able to immediately refer it to E911."
