 BELLSOUTH MOBILITY SERVICE IN LOUISIANA
SURVIVES HURRICANE ANDREW TO SUPPORT RECOVERY AND RELIEF
ATLANTA, Aug. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- In the wake of Hurricane Andrew's battering the Gulf Coast, BellSouth Mobility offers near-normal coverage, although several cell sites are relying on battery-powered back-up systems.
Six commercial generators currently are en route to the Lafayette/Baton Rouge region. The emergency equipment will allow for continued cellular service if power outages persist.
The storm rendered three cell sites directly in the path of the storm inoperative -- New Iberia, Morgan City and Baldwin. The majority of cell sites in Baton Rouge, Lafayette and New Orleans continue to provide service.
BellSouth Mobility in Lafayette, Baton Rouge and New Orleans have provided free cellular phones to emergency services, hospital personnel, civil defense and utility crews. Technical and engineering crews are on standby to ensure optimum communications during recovery and relief efforts.
