BELLSOUTH MOBILITY AND MEDPHONE CORPORATION TO JOINTLY MARKET NEW
STATE-OF-THE-ART CELLULAR CARDIAC EMERGENCY UNIT IN ATLANTA
ATLANTA, April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Each year, 350,000 Americans suddenly collapse with cardiac arrest, making it the number one killer in the United States.
Today, the vast majority of these patients cannot be revived at the scene and are rushed to hospitals, where less than 5 percent survive. Later this week, the odds of being revived at the scene -- and surviving cardiac arrest -- will be improved for Atlantans, thanks to BellSouth Mobility and MEDphone Corporation (AMEX: MPO.EC), with introduction of MEDphone's new MDphone Cellular+Rescue(TM) in the Atlanta area. BellSouth Mobility and MEDphone Corporation announced today that they have completed an agreement to jointly market MEDphone's new MDphone Cellular+Rescue in Atlanta beginning May 1. The suitcase-sized MDphone Cellular+Rescue is the only fully portable cardiac emergency unit to offer victims of cardiac arrest the ability to receive both diagnosis and defibrillation treatment via cellular technology. Further, the MDphone Cellular+Rescue's capabilities go beyond cardiac-related emergencies, providing a verbal communications link to hospital-based physicians for immediate access and guidance in any medical emergency.
Odie Donald, president of BellSouth Mobility, said: "Because cellular provides access to communications virtually anywhere, it has long been a critical part of emergency rescue operations. The use of cellular phone transmission to defibrillate the victim of cardiac arrest is a demonstration of the versatility and importance of cellular communications. Not only does cellular provide access to help virtually anywhere it's needed, but it can also be used to deliver life-saving treatment."
 S. Eric Wachtel, president of MEDphone Corporation, said: "We are pleased to begin a joint marketing program with BellSouth Mobility in Atlanta. As part of this program, MEDphone Corporation will provide training to BellSouth Mobility sales representatives in support of a joint marketing effort. One of the goals of this joint marketing program is to further broaden corporate and first responder accessibility to the life-saving technology provided by the MDphone Cellular+Rescue."
Cited for its ability to save lives in the October 1991 issue of The American Journal of Cardiology, the easy-to-use system will permit emergency personnel such as fire, police and other first responders to set up immediate two-way communication with a clinician at the hospital, who will provide step-by-step verbal instructions to stabilize the victim during the first critical minutes of any emergency. But the system will go well beyond this verbal communication, as it may make the difference between life and death for cardiac arrest victims, who must be defibrillated or restored to normal heart rhythm within four to six minutes to prevent brain damage or death.
The first responder simply opens the case and selects either the cellular mode or the system's landline capability, which uses a standard phone jack. Once the mode is selected, the unit will automatically dial the hospital base station, whose number will be already pre-programmed. Once the connection is made, the first responder at the site of the emergency has immediate two-way verbal communication with a hospital clinician, who can offer instructions to stabilize the victim until emergency transport is arranged.
In addition, a corresponding profile will automatically appear on the MDphone base station computer indicating the response team operating the MDphone Cellular+Rescue. In the case of chest pain, the first responder can place electrode pads on the victim's chest that will transmit the ECG to the hospital clinician for analysis. If hospital clinicians determine that the heart rhythm is life threatening and defibrillation is necessary, they can send a signal to the unit that will remotely defibrillate the victim in the field -- dramatically increasing the victim's chance of survival.
MEDphone Corporation is a leader in the emerging field of interactive medical assistance and communication. The company designs, develops and markets medical products that provide remote communication, diagnosis and treatment via the telephone.
BellSouth Mobility, a part of BellSouth Cellular Corp., is the largest cellular carrier in the Southeast, serving more than 500,000 customers.
