BELLSOUTH LAUNCHES FAMILY OF INTERACTIVE SERVICES IN PERU.

BellSouth has started the Latin America deployment of a new family of interactive wireless services with the launch of BellSouth Internet Movil in Peru. The service will eventually be offered throughout the Latin American countries in which BellSouth has operations.

BellSouth Internet Movil offers unique products for the business user, with full integration of PC-based calendar, directory, e-mail, short messaging and instant messaging. These services are provided from a multi-access Internet portal, which customers can access through both cellular and wireline phones, as well as personal computers.

For consumers, BellSouth Internet Movil provides the opportunity to access the Internet with simple voice commands that will allow them to find headline news, weather, sports scores, movies and horoscopes.

BellSouth Internet Movil was created to address Latin America's unique characteristics. "Our experience in Latin America has told us that Latin America embraces new technologies at a fast pace. However, two key factors have inhibited the penetration of wireless Internet service in the region," said Roberto Peon, chief marketing officer of BellSouth International. "One factor is the low penetration of personal computers in homes. The other factor is landline cost, which makes tasks such as web surfing very expensive."

BellSouth Internet Movil overcomes these two factors and makes it easy for Latin Americans to participate not only in the Internet experience, but also to benefit from very useful applications. "For example, with our voice portal customers can access information from the Internet using only their voice and a regular wireless phone," Peon said.

A key component of BellSouth Internet Movil is the multi-access portal, which was designed by StarMedia Networks, a leading provider of integrated Internet solutions. "This launch is testimony to the strength of StarMedia's multi access portal technology, said Jose Manuel Tost, president of StarMedia. "In essence, we have created a product that will make it convenient for BellSouth's customers to use their cellular phones to access online information. Clearly, we are excited by the prospects of extending this technology throughout Latin America."
