BELLSOUTH ENTERPRISES EXPANDS ATLANTA PCS TRIAL
ATLANTA, Sept. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 150 BellSouth employees

are using fully portable, pocket-sized telephone handsets in office buildings and on the streets of midtown Atlanta as BellSouth Enterprises expands its ongoing personal communications trial here.
It's part of the second phase, or the user portion, of the trial which was started nearly two years ago by BSE's Worldwide Wireless Strategy Group. For this phase, an operating testbed system has been constructed in midtown Atlanta with cells deployed in two BellSouth buildings, in the retail level of a nearby multi-use office complex and on the streets adjacent to the buildings. The users were issued SpectraLink 2000 handsets, a six-ounce, pocket-sized telephone receiver to use for the duration of the trial. The trial will end next summer.
"We've completed the technical aspects of our Atlanta PCS testbed and now we're looking at the qualitative questions -- how customers use the service, how long do they talk, how convenient is the service, where do they use it, information like that," said Eric Ensor, assistant vice president of the Worldwide Wireless Strategy Group. "The findings from this test will be used along with the results from our other PCS trials to help us determine what the customer wants and expects from a wireless or personal communications service."
In the summer of 1990, BSE petitioned the Federal Communications Commission for an experimental license to conduct a two-phase personal communications service trial in the midtown Atlanta area. The FCC awarded the license in October and BSE began its trial immediately. In the first phase, BSE evaluated radio wave propagation and building penetration in three frequency ranges: 866 MHz, 902-928 MHz and 1850-1990 MHz. The second phase, or user portion of the trial, is being conducted in the 902-928 MHz range.
Information and data on calling and usage patterns will be collected from the SpectraLink equipment. Additional and more subjective information on the service and equipment will be discerned from periodic participant surveys and focus groups.
The PCS trial in Atlanta is the fourth PCS-type trial conducted by BSE's Worldwide Wireless Strategy Group. The other trials include a CT2-type test conducted in Athens, Ga., that was completed about a year ago, a trial of microcells being conducted in Miami, and a market trial featuring three PCS-type services and 750 customers currently underway in Orlando, Fla.
The Worldwide Wireless Strategy Group studies the market and technical viability of wireless communications systems. It is part of BellSouth Enterprises, a holding company which manages a group of companies within BellSouth Corporation (NYSE: BLS) that provide wireless telecommunications, advertising and publishing, and information-based services throughout the world.
