BELLSOUTH ENTERPRISES BEGINS PERSONAL NUMBER SERVICE TRIAL
ATLANTA, Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- BellSouth Enterprises began its fifth personal communications service-related trial today when its Worldwide Wireless Strategy Group initiated a test of Personal Number Service (PNS) that includes a variety of previously unavailable voice and fax services encompassing wireline and wireless networks.
More than 120 friendly users -- employees of BellSouth Enterprises and BellSouth Cellular located throughout the Atlanta area -- are participating in the trial.
Personal Number Service is a new concept in telecommunications that assigns a telephone number to a person, not a location, effectively allowing a subscriber to use one number for all calls and helping them manage their incoming communications.
The service does not require the user to change any existing phone numbers. The subscriber simply provides the various numbers -- office, cellular, pager, fax and home -- and instructions on where and when the calls should be routed, and the PNS directs the calls in the order requested by the subscriber.
"We're testing the most comprehensive personal number service available today," said Eric Ensor, assistant vice president, Worldwide Wireless Strategy Group. "It offers the subscriber unprecedented flexibility and control over their communications. And that's what PNS is all about -- letting the customer decide what communications he or she wants to receive and when, no matter which communications device is involved."
PNS is accomplished through a combination of pre-arranged telephone and cellular network techniques like routing and automatic cellular telephone registration, that operate in conjunction with a unique Advanced Intelligent Network (AIN) platform, designed to specifications developed by BellSouth, and software administered by BellSouth Information Networks.
A call to a PNS subscriber is initiated by dialing a personal number which sets off a set of intelligent network routing algorithms to locate the subscriber. For the trial, PNS participants provided their various contact numbers in the order to which incoming calls should be routed. For instance, a customer might request that all calls be sent first to his cellular phone, if it is on, and if no answer, to his office phone. If there is still no answer, the call could be sent to a pager or voice mailbox.
Personal Number Service subscribers are offered a variety of features, including four that are unique to BellSouth's service -- BoomerRing, Fax-Store-and-Forward, SmartPaging, and Automatic Cellular Phone Registration.
BoomerRing is a voice mail feature that lets the subscriber return voice mail calls by pressing one button, and return back to voice mail once the call is completed.
Fax-Store-and-Forward service allows the subscriber to either send all faxes to a particular fax location, or store them in fax mail box for retrieval at a later time.
SmartPaging service sends the subscriber a text message whenever they receive a fax or voice mail.
Automatic Cellular Phone Registration is a service that recognizes when a subscriber's cellular phone is on and automatically tries it first. For the trial, it is being offered by BellSouth Mobility.
Other features available to subscribers include:
-- Priority Call: The subscriber can designate certain callers as a priority and instruct the PNS to forward calls only from them.
-- Caller Override: The subscriber has the flexibility to redirect all calls to any designated number.
-- Call Announcement: PNS announces the incoming caller's name with the subscriber having the option of accepting or redirecting the call.
The Worldwide Wireless Strategy Group will conduct periodic surveys and focus-group sessions to determine the customers' satisfaction with the service and its various features. That information will be used towards fine-tuning a commercial service that is expected to begin in early 1993.
The PNS trial in Atlanta is the fifth PCS-type trial conducted by BSE's Worldwide Wireless Strategy Group. The other trials include a CT2 test conducted in Athens, Ga., that was completed about a year ago; a trial of microcells conducted in Miami; a market trial featuring three PCS-type services and 750 customers recently completed in Orlando; and a PCS user trial involving 150 participants in Atlanta.
The Worldwide Wireless Strategy Group studies the market and technical viability of wireless communications systems. BellSouth Information Networks develops enhanced telecommunications network systems using the Advanced Intelligent Network and a number of other enabling platforms. BellSouth Mobility provides cellular telephone service throughout nine states in the southeastern U.S. The three entities are part of BellSouth Enterprises, a holding company which manages a group of companies within BellSouth Corporation (NYSE: BLS) that offer wireless telecommunications, advertising and publishing, and information-based services throughout the world.
