BELLSOUTH ENTERPRISES ACQUIRES HEALTH CARE INFO SERVICES PROVIDER
ATLANTA, April 16 /PRNewswire/ -- BellSouth Enterprises, Inc. expanded its presence in the health care field today with the acquisition of Cooperative Healthcare Networks, Inc. (CHN), an Alpharetta, Ga.-based developer of automated health care information services, for an undisclosed amount of cash.
CHN, a privately owned company, operates StatLink(TM), a powerful state-of-the-art software product designed to improve the efficiency of health care transactions. Through StatLink, health care providers can submit claims electronically, precertify members and referrals, and check member eligibility and claims status at a fraction of the cost of paper claims submission.
"Today, roughly 26 cents out of every dollar spent on health care is for administrative costs," said Joseph Bigley, president of CHN. "With StatLink, we can reduce that by half."
"The acquisition of CHN puts BellSouth on the forefront of a national strategy to reduce the high cost of health care," said Bill Williams, executive director of information services for BellSouth Enterprises. "CHN is in the early stages of marketing StatLink, and with our resources and expertise, they will be able to expand their efforts and offer this innovative, efficient and cost-saving service to physicians, hospitals and other health care providers across the country.
"We've been involved with CHN as a technology developer and foundation network partner for some time," said Williams. "But it is only since the courts released us from the information services restrictions that we have been able to take an active part in bringing this kind of valuable new service to the market."
Through its unique system that accommodates the multitude requirements of health care providers, StatLink serves more than 1,200 physicians, a dozen hospitals and 80 insurers, and Medicare and Medicaid programs in four states. CHN also offers turnkey solutions through computers, software, training and systems support.
With the acquisition, CHN becomes part of BellSouth Enterprises Advanced Network Group of companies, joining Scientific Software, Inc., which offers a leading platform technology used by health care plan managers and insurance companies to build networks that electronically exchange information.
BellSouth Enterprises manages a group of companies within BellSouth Corporation (NYSE: BLS) that provide wireless communications, advertising/publishing and information services worldwide.
