BELLSOUTH CONSORTIUM BEGINS CELLULAR SERVICE IN VENEZUELA
ATLANTA, Dec. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Telcel, a consortium headed by BellSouth Corp. (NYSE: BLS) has begun cellular mobile telephone service in Caracas, Venezuela.
More than 8,000 subscribers had signed up for the service before the first call was placed. "We are very encouraged by the demand in Venezuela," said Brian Hailes, vice president-Latin America for BellSouth International. "Telcel became our second largest Latin American cellular network the very first day it became operational."
With the Venezuela start-up, BellSouth brought to five the number of cellular networks it now operates in Latin America. The others are in Mexico, Chile, Uruguay and Argentina. "This confirms our leadership in the development of mobile telecommunications in Latin America," Hailes continued.
On May 31, Telcel was awarded a 20-year renewable license by the Venezuelan government to build and operate a nationwide cellular network in that country. After Caracas, Telcel plans on expanding cellular service to cover 60 percent of the population (or 12 million people) in the next three years. Service will begin in the major provincial cities of Valencia and Maracaibo within two months.
Telcel's shareholders consist of BellSouth; Comtel, owned by prominent Venezuelan businessman Oswaldo Cisneros; Bancor, a leading Venezuelan financial institution; and BBS, a local engineering group.
BellSouth is an Atlanta-based international telecommunications holding company. Its subsidiaries offer local telephone service in nine Southeastern states and mobile communications service worldwide. They also provide advertising and publishing services and market and maintain stand-alone and fully integrated communications systems.
