BELLSOUTH CHOSEN AS SPONSOR OF LEAD HOUSE DURING 20/20,000 BLITZ-BUILD

AMERICUS, Ga., Feb. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- BellSouth Telecommunications, Habitat for Humanity International's longest standing sponsor, is going to Americus with tool belts and hammers in tow to sponsor the lead house during the 20/20,000 blitz-build.
The 20/20,000 blitz-build is being held April 5-9, in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity (HFH) and the Sumpter County Initiative (SCI). The SCI was launched last spring with the vision of eliminating substandard housing from the area by the year 2000. The 20 homes constructed during this event will mark the milestone of Habitat for Humanity's 20,000 house worldwide.
"We are extremely proud to be working with the growing number of community members who are rolling up their sleeves to make this effort a milestone for the SCI and Habitat for Humanity International," said Carl E. Swearingen, president of Southern Bell operations in Georgia. "We are especially pleased that this house will mark BellSouth's 50th house constructed with Habitat for Humanity."
"Beginning in 1989, BellSouth has steadfastly worked with Habitat for Humanity affiliates to help build houses with needy families," said Millard Fuller, founder and president of Habitat for Humanity International. "What they have done and continue to do is serve as a great role model and example for other companies to follow. Habitat for Humanity is enormously grateful for this partnership."
BellSouth Telecommunications has built homes and partnerships all over the Southeast. Since 1990, BellSouth has organized 42 teams with more than 5,000 employees participating. BellSouth was also the sponsor of a house in Washington during Habitat for Humanity's 1992 Jimmy Carter Work Project.
The sponsorship agreement with Habitat for Humanity includes a financial aid and volunteer relationship between the organizations. The company provides seed money for each house employee teams commit to build. In addition to actually working with the HFH staff to build the houses, employee teams first raise funds to match the seed money provided by the company. HFH funds the remaining half of the cost. The house to be constructed by BellSouth Telecommunications at the 20/20,000 blitz-build is being dedicated to retired BellSouth Telecommunications President B. Franklin Skinner and his family.
BellSouth Telecommunications, Inc., with headquarters in Atlanta and Birmingham, Ala., provides unified direction and support for the local telecommunications operations of BellSouth (NYSE: BLS) in the southeastern United States.
BellSouth Telecommunications, Inc. does business as Southern Bell in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida, and as South Central Bell in Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. These companies serve over 18 million local telephone lines and provide local exchange and intraLATA long distance service over one of the most modern telecommunications networks in the world.
