BELLSOUTH CELLULAR ANNOUNCES AGREEMENT TO SELL IBM'S 9075 PCradio
ATLANTA, March 23 /PRNewswire/ -- BellSouth Cellular Corp. announced today an agreement to become the first cellular service provider to sell IBM's 9075 PCradio(a), a portable and fully integrated data communications system.
Michael Hill, director of Communications Industry Marketing at IBM, said this is the first agreement of its type between IBM and a cellular service provider. Nationally, BellSouth Cellular companies will be remarketers of the PCradio through their national and major account representatives and direct sales distribution channel.
Jim Thorpe, vice president, marketing at BellSouth Cellular, said "a joint marketing agreement is also part of the package, where BellSouth Cellular and IBM will work together to market the product."
Thorpe added that by offering the PCradio as a product alternative for BellSouth Cellular customers, "BellSouth is leading the way in responding to our customers' complex and ever-growing needs for equipment to send data over the cellular network."
What will make the PCradio so appealing to cellular customers is that it is a fully integrated system, which eliminates the need for separate equipment. Additionally, the PCradio can access host databases and electronic mail.
The PCradio also serves as a facsimile machine with a built-in modem and transceiver that makes it less cumbersome than previous cellular data set-ups. It's designed for use just about anywhere, can be used in a moving vehicle and weighs under 6.4 pounds. An optional integrated thermal printer uses a 3-1/8-inch wide paper roll, and will allow for receipt of a hard facsimile copy. Electronic faxes can be sent or received for viewing on the screen.
With an optional handset, the system will work like any other cellular phone for voice capability.
DOS software application programs and other information are stored on removable, compact integrated circuit memory cards. Telephone and battery-charger ports are built in. Serial and parallel ports are available on an optional breakout box.
BellSouth Cellular operates as BellSouth Mobility, the wireline carrier in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, South Carolina and Tennessee and as a non-wireline carrier in Alabama, California, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Mississippi, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin. BellSouth Cellular companies serve more than 1 million customers across the United States.
