BELLSOUTH ASSESSES IMPACT OF STORMS

ATLANTA, March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- BellSouth Corporation (NYSE: BLS) announced today that costs associated with severe winter weather in its Southeastern territory are expected to impact first quarter earnings.
The assessment of unusual expenses associated with abnormal snowfall, heavy rains and storms in the areas BellSouth provides local telephone service is not complete. But preliminary company estimates show that costs relating to the weather will impact its first quarter net income by $20 million to $25 million, or about 5 cents per share.
"Our telephone network and our people performed admirably," said John L. Clendenin, chairman and chief executive of BellSouth. "Even with widespread power outages, our backup systems and dedicated BellSouth technicians maintained telephone service to the vast majority of our customers throughout the periods of severe weather."
However, BellSouth experienced unusual labor and material expenses to maintain and rapidly restore telephone service. Snow, ice, tornadoes and high winds that swept through BellSouth's territory in March, for example, downed exposed telephone lines and poles, generating almost 59,000 trouble reports from its more than 18.6 million access lines.
BellSouth is an international telecommunications holding company. Its subsidiaries offer local telephone service in nine Southeastern states and mobile communications services worldwide, provide advertising and publishing services, and market and maintain stand-alone and fully integrated communications systems.
