BELLSOUTH AND WELLFLEET COMMUNICATIONS JOIN FORCES TO MARKET HIGH-SPEED NETWORK SYSTEMS AND SERVICES

ATLANTA and BILLERICA, Mass., April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- BellSouth Corporation (NYSE: BLS) and Wellfleet Communications Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: WFLT) today announced a co-marketing agreement to meet the growing demand for high-speed data networking solutions to link multi- vendor local area networks (LANs).
Under the agreement, customers will be provided with BellSouth's network-based data services such as Switched Multimegabit Data Service (SMDS) and Frame Relay, and Wellfleet's family of highly available, high-performance router/bridges for multiprotocol networks.
"As BellSouth continues its deployment of complex broadband data services, it is critical for us to work closely with the leading data networking equipment providers," said Rod Odom, vice president-marketing for BellSouth Telecommunications, Inc. "Together, we can provide both the integrated solutions and the high level of support that are demanded by high-speed data networking customers."
BellSouth services such as SMDS and Frame Relay offer an economical switched alternative to private line for LAN interconnection. Together with Wellfleet's entire line of multiprotocol routers, users can link LANs over high-speed lines in a single seamless service offering.
"Network designers are building hybrid wide-area backbones that use a mix of public services and private communications facilities. This agreement brings together the high availability aspects of Wellfleet's line of multiprotocol routers combined with BellSouth's highly reliable data services offerings in a 'one-stop-shopping' solution," stated Gary Bowen, Wellfleet senior VP marketing and field operations. "It will also allow BellSouth and Wellfleet network designers to utilize Wellfleet's upcoming Bandwidth on Demand, Dial Backup and Switched Services Features to provide customers with maximum uptime and network utilization."
Wellfleet has supported SMDS and Frame Relay since their adoption as standards. The company's Frame Relay interface supports the Local Management Interface (LMI) extensions and all protocols over it. Wellfleet has actively contributed to the SMDS Interest Group in an effort to develop standards. Key to SMDS service is the SMDS Data Exchange Interface (DXI) protocol. The protocol was proposed by Digital Link Corp. and Wellfleet and accepted as a standard by the SMDS Interest Group. Wellfleet has participated in interoperability testing with all the major public carriers and RBOCs.
BellSouth is an Atlanta-based international telecommunications holding company. Its BellSouth Telecommunications Inc. subsidiary provides local telephone service to over 18 million lines in nine southeastern states and also markets and maintains stand-alone and fully integrated communications systems. The company offers SMDS and Frame Relay services in Atlanta; Birmingham, Ala.; Nashville, Tenn., and Charlotte, N.C., and expects to expand these offerings to other southeastern cities early next year.
Wellfleet Communications is a leading vendor of high performance, highly available router/bridges for companies building mission-critical enterprise internetworks. The company's products are based on a unique symmetric multiprocessor architecture with a distributed fault-tolerant software operating system. The products are designed to satisfy a growing need for scalable performance, high availability and comprehensive connectivity and interoperability.
