 BELLSOUTH ADVERTISING & PUBLISHING RECEIVES 'AWARD OF EXCELLENCE'
 ATLANTA, Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- BellSouth Advertising & Publishing Corporation (BAPCO) has been named the winner of the "Award of Excellence" in the Mentor category of the 1992 Partnerships In Education Journal (PIEJ) National Partnership Awards for its "Partners 'n Pals" program with Shamrock High School in Atlanta, according to Dusty Foster, coordinator of BAPCO's Partners 'n Pals program.
 The award presentation will be made to BAPCO at the Partnerships In Education Journal National Conference on Friday, Sept. 18, in Sarasota, Fla. BAPCO is one of 16 business-education partnerships to win a PIEJ national award. This is the fifth year that PIEJ has sponsored this national recognition competition to search and identify outstanding collaborations between business and the nation's schools.
 "Partners 'n Pals" matches employee mentors with at-risk high school students for one-on-one relationships that last throughout the school year. In 1992, BAPCO has matched 85 employees with 94 Shamrock High School students.
 BAPCO pioneered the first corporate mentoring program in the Atlanta area in 1988. In the last two years, 10 other Atlanta companies have implemented similar mentoring programs, according to Foster.
 "Our objective is to make a measurable difference in our students' attitudes, attendance, conduct and grades," she said. "During mentoring sessions, students and mentors talk about specific coursework, grades, drugs, friends, family, college -- whatever students choose to discuss. Mentors are trained to listen and to provide direction without being judgmental. As supportive, encouraging adults, we develop long-term relationships of trust."
 Of the students who participated in the program last year, 65 percent improved their grades, 45 percent improved their attendance, and 29 percent improved their conduct.
 "We asked the students participating in the program what it has meant to them. Their comments in a March 1992 survey demonstrated positive changes in their attitudes, healthier personal relationships, and boosted self-esteem," said Foster. "Awards are great, and we feel very honored by the Partnerships In Education Journal. But, the personal rewards far outweigh any tangible recognition than an award can bring."
