 BELLSOUTH, HUGHES TO CONDUCT E-TDMA TRIALS
 NEW ORLEANS, Feb. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- BellSouth Enterprises, Inc.


(BSE), and Hughes Network Systems, Inc. (HNS), today announced plans to conduct a year-long field trial of the Extended Time Division Multiple Access (E-TDMA) technology, a potential digital operating standard that could greatly increase the capacity of cellular networks.
 In the field trial, Hughes will overlay it GMH2000 Cellular Telephone System on BellSouth Cellular's existing mobile telecommunications system in Mobile, Ala. More than 200 selected participants will test system capabilities and characteristics through the use of cellular telephones that comply both with AMPS (analog) and IS-54 (digital) standards, as well as current E-TDMA (digital) specifications.
 "We're looking at a number of ways to expand the capacity of our wireless communications networks, and E-TDMA, as the second generation of the TDMA standard, has the potential to dramatically improve those capabilities," said Eric Ensor, assistant vice president of BSE's Worldwide Wireless Strategy Group. "This trial will help us determine just how viable the technology is in an existing multi-cell environment."
 Developed by HNS, E-TDMA is an extension of the current TDMA industry standard, the adopted digital standard of the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA). By employing E-TDMA technology, carriers could increase cellular network capacity by as much as 15 times over existing analog capabilities.
 The technology also offers additional features, such as frequency-hopping and improved security, channel performance and signal quality. The radio system can be remotely configured for selection of mode of operation (analog or digital), or can self-adapt to the type of traffic in the local cell. These flexible, adaptable cell site radios are expected to further reduce costs of operation and maintenance for operators. The GMH2000 system is designed to accommodate older analog customer equipment as well as new digital systems, allowing for the universal introduction of E-TDMA cellular service wherever AMPS-based systems are deployed.
 "These joint trials of the complete GMH2000 network will allow BellSouth the opportunity to confirm the numerous operational advantages that have been built into the system," said Pradeep Kaul, executive vice president of HNS.
 The GMH2000 utilizes a class 5 end office digital switch, which provides the advanced, innovative and stable technology that will be required for cellular systems in the coming environment of intelligent networks and the myriad capabilities they will offer.
 The HNS M6100 handset to be used in the field trial recently completed extensive testing by the CTIA and will be introduced commercially later this year. The phone includes advanced audio processing techniques that greatly improve cellular conversations in situations with high background noise, an important improvement for hands-free operation in vehicles.
