BELL INDUSTRIES AWARDED CONTRACT TO DISTRIBUTE SEMICONDUCTOR PRODUCTS FROM IBM'S TECHNOLOGY PRODUCTS UNIT THROUGHOUT THE U.S.

LOS ANGELES, March 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Bell Industries Inc. (NYSE: BI) announced today that it has been awarded a contract to distribute semiconductor products from IBM's Technology Products unit throughout the United States.
Theodore Williams, Bell's president and chief executive officer, said the wide range of Technology Products' semiconductors and related products will be distributed by the company's Electronics Distribution Group, through 32 sales and service facilities located in major electronics markets in the United States. EDG serves more than 20,000 customers with a wide range of electronic components.
"All of us at Bell are proud and excited to have been selected as an IBM national distributor," Williams stated. "We intend to develop the tremendous opportunity provided by this contract to accelerate our sales growth by offering our customers the quality products and proven technology associated with IBM."
IBM's Technology Products unit, which operates within the IBM family of companies, is the world's largest microelectronics enterprise, developing, manufacturing and marketing a wide range of integrated microelectronic technologies. Its products and services range from semiconductor design and fabrication to complete and fully tested functional assemblies. Technology Products has for decades used IBM's world-renowned semiconductor and R&D resources exclusively for IBM's own product families. Now it is offering to the merchant marketplace many of these leadership technologies.
Sales of Bell's EDG Group for the fiscal year ended June 30, 1992, amounted to $251 million. Total corporate sales were $414 million.
Williams said Bell will immediately begin taking orders for the Technology Products' line with initial shipments anticipated in April.
