BELL ATLANTIC TO OFFER ADVANCED FACSIMILE SERVICES FOR BUSINESS
BALTIMORE, March 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Doing business by fax machine will be easier thanks to a family of new services which will soon be available from Bell Atlantic's local telephone companies.
Fax Overflow, Fax Mailbox and Fax Broadcast are the new Bell Atlantic FeatureFAX Facsimile Services. All three will use the telephone network to electronically store and forward information.
"These new information services were developed to increase efficiency for businesses that depend on fax messages," said Rick White, assistant vice president of information services. "In the future, Bell Atlantic expects to offer fax users more applications using information services technology."
Fax Overflow will help businesses whose fax machines are constantly busy with incoming messages. When a machine is taking a message, the next fax call is accepted by the Fax Overflow service, as if the customer had a second fax machine. The message is forwarded to the fax machine as soon as the phone line is available.
Fax Mailbox is designed for business people who want to receive fax messages when they are away from the office or when confidentiality is important. Messages are received in a private fax mailbox and can be retrieved at any time on a convenient fax machine. Individuals can be notified on their pagers or voice mail when a fax message arrives. Fax Mailbox is expected to appeal to sales people, consultants and telecommuters.
Fax Broadcast will allow businesses to send a document to many locations simultaneously without tying up phone lines and personnel for hours and without the need for additional fax machines. And when numbers called are busy, the service tries again until the messages can be sent. For example, Fax Broadcast could be used by public relations firms sending news releases or school administrators transmitting messages to many campuses.
"The applications of Bell Atlantic's FeatureFAX services are endless, but the advantages are the same regardless of how they're used: they save valuable time and money while offering privacy and convenience," said FeatureFAX Product Manger Bruce McCown.
In a trial, about 80 Bell Atlantic employees are using FeatureFAX services for telecommuting and handling customer needs and news releases.
Bell Atlantic has also begun a customer trial in Philadelphia and is seeking to expand it to more businesses. By mid-year, Bell Atlantic will make the service available in several other metropolitan areas of the mid-Atlantic region.
Monthly charges for FeatureFAX services are expected to be approximately $10 for Fax Overflow and $15 for Fax Mailbox. Fax Broadcast will cost $5 monthly plus 40 cents per minute for each number called.
During the trial, the three new services are utilizing a Tandem CLX minicomputer, Audiofax Fax Pad processors and software by Tandem Telecommunications Systems, Inc.
Bell Atlantic's telephone companies, serving the Mid-Atlantic region, are Bell of Pennsylvania, New Jersey Bell, Diamond State Telephone serving Delaware, and the Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Companies serving West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia.
