BELL ATLANTIC TO CO-SPONSOR TRADE FAIR AND TOTAL QUALITY MANAGEMENT
SEMINAR TOMORROW FOR MINORITY, WOMEN AND SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS
PHILADELPHIA, June 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Wednesday, June 24, is Opportunity Day for minority, women and small business enterprises in the Delaware Valley.
Bell Atlantic (NYSE: BEL), in conjunction with the NEW-PENN-DEL Minority Business Resource Council, Inc.(A), invited hundreds of small business owners to a trade fair from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and a seminar from 1 to 4:30 p.m. on Total Quality Management.
The trade fair provides a unique way for prospective suppliers to meet with Bell Atlantic purchasing agents to discuss real job opportunities in 1992 in specific product/service areas. Those opportunities run the gamut from cleaning services to engineering services, to office equipment, to the sale of used computer equipment.
The Bell Atlantic Purchasing Group works to increase the amount of business the corporation does with minority and women's business enterprises (referred to as "M/WBE"). "Under our M/WBE program, we maintain a database of minority and women suppliers and a staff to assist in matching suppliers with purchasing requirements," said Mark Coassolo, M/WBE coordinator for Pennsylvania and Delaware.
"Purchasing agents will be interviewing potential suppliers to discuss Bell Atlantic product and service requirements, including the requirement that our suppliers have their own Quality Improvement Program in place," Coassolo said.
In the afternoon, vendors are invited to share in Bell Atlantic's commitment to quality by attending a free seminar on Total Quality Management. "At Bell Atlantic, we are committed to meeting our customers' requirements for defect-free products and services, and we expect our suppliers to do the same," said Sherry Embrey, M/WBE regional coordinator.
The seminar will be conducted by presenters from the Bell Atlantic Quality Institute and Bell Atlantic Quality Technology. "We will describe the steps a company can take to improve the quality of their internal processes and then we will talk about the steps Bell Atlantic takes to ensure quality from their supplier base," Embrey said.
Bell Atlantic has conducted Quality seminars this month in Silver Spring, Md., Richmond, Va., and Newark, N.J. The 177 attendees at these sessions gave an "Excellent" rating for the value of the information presented and came away with an appreciation and understanding of the importance of installing a quality process in their organizations.
