BELL ATLANTIC TARIFFS SMDS-TYPE SERVICE

 BELL ATLANTIC TARIFFS SMDS-TYPE SERVICE
 WASHINGTON, Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- A tariff for a trial service

offering of a switched multi-megabit data service went into effect for Bell of Pennsylvania, a Bell Atlantic company, at the end of last year.
The high-speed switched data service is available in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. The rates for the service are $500 per month for each subscriber interface to the public data service, plus a non-recurring connection charge of $850 per line.
Bell Atlantic is calling this pre-switched multi-megabit data service (pre-SMDS) because it includes many -- but not all -- of the features and capabilities as defined by the Bellcore specifications for SMDS service. The pre-SMDS service features include:
-- Connectionless data transfer between subscriber interfaces.
-- 1.17 Mbps service access using the SMDS Interface Protocol.
-- Support of customer protocols such as TCP/IP, Novell, IPX and AppleTalk.
"The approval of this tariff represents the first step in Bell Atlantic's phased deployment of full Switched Multi-megabit Data Service (SMDS) throughout the six mid-Atlantic states served by the seven Bell Atlantic telephone companies," said Paul Froyd, Bell Atlantic director, wide area networking product development.
Bell Atlantic's pre-SMDS service is based on prototype equipment used in a technology trial with Temple University from September 1990 to March 1991. The equipment, which was made by QPSX of Australia, has been redeployed with the support of Siemens Stromberg-Carlson, to support the pre-SMDS service now being offered.
Bell Atlantic expects to offer SMDS service that fully complies with the Bellcore specifications by mid-1992. The Bell Atlantic phone companies plan to deploy SMDS as rapidly as they receive, install and test equipment delivered by the vendor, Siemens Stromberg-Carlson. The service will be deployed in Pennsylvania and other markets, such as the Washington metropolitan area and northern New Jersey.
Bell Atlantic, based in Philadelphia, is the parent of New Jersey Bell, Bell of Pennsylvania, Diamond State Telephone (Delaware) and the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone companies serving Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington.
Bell Atlantic also has strategic agreements with a series of LAN Value-Added Resellers and with a Value-Added Distributor of data communications equipment, which enables Bell Atlantic to provide enterprise-wide data and voice network integration services to its customers.
Bell Atlantic is also the parent of companies that provide wireless communications in the mid-Atlantic region and business systems and services for customer-based information technology, including software, systems integration, hardware and software service and support, and financial services, throughout the United States and internationally. In addition, Bell Atlantic International offers network services and consulting to telephone authorities throughout the world, and in conjunction with Ameritech, owns a majority interest in Telecom Corporation of New Zealand.
