BELL ATLANTIC STATEMENT IN RESPONSE TO REP. RICK BOUCHER'S COMMUNICATIONS COMPETITIVENESS AND INFRASTRUCTURE MODERNIZATION ACT

WASHINGTON, March 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Aubrey Sarvis, Bell Atlantic vice president, federal relations, issued the following statement in response to Rep. Rick Boucher's (D-Va.) Communications Competitiveness and Infrastructure Modernization Act:
Rep. Boucher's bill makes higher quality video programming more widely available by allowing telephone companies to offer video services in their own operating regions.
Today cable television customers are at a disadvantage since nearly all cable television companies operate with neither regulation nor competition. Because of this, cable TV service is often both poor in quality and expensive for what is offered. Congress recognized this in passing limited new regulations for the cable industry last year.
Rep. Boucher's bill takes the next logical step.
This carefully crafted legislation will hasten the delivery of new services to cable television consumers and will promote competition by providing programmers, information providers and advertisers with an additional delivery vehicle -- the video dial tone platform -- for their services.
We're enthusiastic about the bill and will work with Congress to enact it into law.
