BELL ATLANTIC RESPONSE TO FCC DECISION REGARDING PCS

PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Following is Bell Atlantic's (NYSE: BEL) statement in response to today's FCC decision regarding PCS. It was made by Larry Babbio, chairman of Bell Atlantic Enterprises International.
"Today's FCC decision is good news for American consumers and businesses: by allocating new radio spectrum to wireless, we will see an explosion of products, services and applications only dreamed of today -- changing the way we live, work and relate to one another in the 21st century -- and probably before then for Bell Atlantic customers.
"This decision is also good news for Bell Atlantic. We've been a leader in developing PCS. Today's rules create whole new opportunities to put our experience to work and allow us to go forward with our plans.
"We will aggressively pursue licenses in the PCS spectrum to extend our market presence, to complement our existing wireless service areas, and to enhance our landline network -- whatever makes the optimum sense to bring to our customers anytime, any place, portable, wire-free communications.
"We look forward to working with the commission on expanding eligibility, and on furthering their program on minorities, women, small business and rural telephone companies.
"Today's decision clearly recognizes the significance of wireless technology to our country's communications infrastructure, as well as the contribution of those who have built our wireless network to date -- the best wireless system in the world."
Additional points about Bell Atlantic's cellular business were made by Denny Strigl, president of Bell Atlantic Mobile:
"Obviously today's decision will add more wireless competitors in each market. We look forward to that stepped up competition, and are confident Bell Atlantic Mobile will continue its record growth through this period of rapid change for two reasons: More competitors will only make for a more dynamic marketplace, increasing overall awareness of and demand for all wireless products and services.
"Second, we have a leg up because we've been a leader in developing and delivering PCS. In fact, Bell Atlantic Mobile already has begun offering commercial personal communications services and introducing one of the most advanced personal communications concepts in the nation.
"Bell Atlantic Mobile has a clear vision of PCS, one that will allow our customers to send or receive any message, voice or data, any time and any place, across all networks. While others have been talking about PCS conceptually, we've been aggressively building toward this vision.
"Today's decision also clearly recognizes the contribution that the cellular industry has made to both the economy and the communications infrastructure of this country. We are delighted that expertise has been recognized by allowing Bell Atlantic and other cellular and local exchange carriers to participate in this opportunity.
"In just 10 years, the nation's cellular carriers have invested

$12 billion to create 1,500 cellular systems, employing more than 340,000 people and serving more than 12 million customers.
"The 1990s promises to be an exciting time for our industry, as a result of today's FCC decisions. At Bell Atlantic Mobile, we look forward to competing in this new, increasingly dynamic, market."
