BELL ATLANTIC MOBILE ISSUES ADVISORY ON 'PAGING SCAM'

BELL ATLANTIC MOBILE ISSUES ADVISORY ON 'PAGING SCAM'
Bell Atlantic Mobile Systems today issued the following on an

alleged "paging scam":
Recently there have been many news stories in the mid-Atlantic region and elsewhere concerning an alleged "scam" involving the use of pagers.
According to the story, someone is placing calls to customer pagers from a 212-540-XXXX telephone number. When paging customers return the call, they are call-forwarded to a 976-type information service and billed for a connection fee of about $50.
After receiving many calls from the media about this story, we contacted New York Telephone to determine if it is true.
The facts are that three years ago a situation occurred involving a group of doctors using a paging service in New York City. The perpetrators of the scam were investigated and shut down. Since then, it has never happened again using New York Telephone's 212-540 exchanges.
More importantly, calls cannot be placed to the 212-540-XXXX exchange from outside New York Telephone territory. Therefore, it would be impossible for anyone to perpetuate this fraud as described in the stories.
Based on the few calls we have received from our paging customers in the mid-Atlantic region, there has not been any scam of which we are directly aware.
