BELL ATLANTIC INTRODUCES HOME MANAGEMENT SERVICES IN WASHINGTON AREA

WASHINGTON, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Consumers in the Washington metropolitan area now can pay bills and shop for groceries and other goods more conveniently and easily by subscribing to Bell Atlantic Home Management Services, which just became available with the start of the new year.
Bell Atlantic Home Management Services are offered by the C&P Telephone companies, which are Bell Atlantic companies. They enable people to automate tasks such as bill paying, banking and catalog shopping.
"Our services will do more than simply offer consumers a way to pay bills and shop for groceries faster -- Bell Atlantic's services will begin to change the way people spend time and the way they go about their daily chores," said Art Bushkin, president of information services for Bell Atlantic.
Customers of Bell Atlantic Home Management Services will be given a variety of catalogs with bar code information and the use of a Bell Atlantic ScanFone, which works as a regular telephone as well as providing access to Home Management Services. The ScanFone comes equipped with a 16-character display screen, a magnetic stripe credit card reader to record credit card data and a light pen used to scan bar codes. The ScanFone system is provided by US Order of Herndon, Va., which currently has customers in more than 30 states.
"Our experience has shown that consumers are comfortable automating their bill paying and shopping when they are working with something as familiar as a telephone and as easy to use as a light pen and a card scanner," said William F. Gorog, US Order's chairman of the board and chief executive officer. "We're confident that Bell Atlantic's Home Management Services will receive ready acceptance in the Washington area."
When shopping, customers select from more than 100,000 items offered in a variety of catalogs ranging from Barnes & Noble Booksellers to Crate & Barrel. Customers scan a bar code, and then each item is verified on the display screen, which also shows the estimated price for the order. Customers verify and place their orders by pressing a button.
Payment is usually made by credit card using the magnetic card reader, although some items, such as groceries, can be paid for by check when they are delivered. In the Washington metropolitan area, grocery shopping is provided in selected areas through Safeway Express. A delivery fee of $9.95 applies to each order.
When paying bills, customers use a bar code sheet created especially for them that lists their regular monthly bills. They scan a bar code, and enter the amount to be paid and the payment date. Funds are transferred automatically. The service works with any U.S. financial institution. Bill payments are deducted from customers' checking accounts and itemized on subsequent bank statements. Customers may also check the account balance in their bank accounts if they have an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card on the MOST network.
Take out food can be ordered by scanning bar codes on menus from participating restaurants. Orders are delivered to the customer's door by Takeout Taxi for a delivery charge of $3. Takeout Taxi is not available in all areas.
Customers in the Washington metropolitan area can subscribe to Bell Atlantic Home Management Services for $11.95 a month by calling 800-777-9699. This includes the services described above, the use of the ScanFone unit, a user guide, a bill payment enrollment form, merchandise catalogs, grocery and takeout food catalogs (if available in their areas), and a coupon for one free grocery delivery.
The Bell Atlantic ScanFone is provided by US Order in Herndon. US Order is an affiliate of WorldCorp (NYSE: WOA).
Bell Atlantic Corporation (NYSE: BEL), based in Philadelphia, is the parent company of New Jersey Bell, Bell of Pennsylvania, Diamond State Telephone (Delaware), and the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Companies, of Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington.
