BELL ATLANTIC INTRODUCES FAMILY OF TELEPHONE EQUIPMENT
 FOR CONSUMER MARKET
ARLINGTON, Va., July 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Bell Atlantic Network Services Inc. today announced its family of Bell Atlantic Champion Products -- a consumer line of telephone equipment which includes cordless and feature-rich telephones, answering devices and units that notify users of incoming calls and messages.
Bell Atlantic's consumer telephone equipment is the result of its intrapreneurial program known as Champion. The Bell Atlantic Champion Products will be sold in retail stores across the United States beginning in July.
"We want to offer consumers a choice of products and services that best meets their communications needs. For example some consumers want to purchase an answering machine that contains a magnetic tape for recording messages, while others prefer the benefits of having a telephone network-based call answering service, such as Bell Atlantic's Answer Call service," said Dick Alston, Bell Atlantic vice-president-marketing. "We will continue to add innovative products and services to our consumer line to meet these needs."
The Bell Atlantic-labelled consumer and small-business equipment is being brought to market under a distribution agreement. Columbia Telecommunications Group (Columbia Tel-Com) -- a privately held New York corporation with more than 1,000 national retail accounts -- will be the distributor for Bell Atlantic. Columbia Tel-Com currently distributes retail telephone products via mass market, mail order, telemarketing, catalogs, department stores, specialty chains and premium accounts.
"Numerous retail buyers have expressed interest in handling high quality, reasonably priced phones and accessories from Bell Atlantic," said Brian O'Sullivan, project manager for the CPE line. "The arrangement with Columbia Tel-Com and Bell Atlantic will meet that need and will allow Bell Atlantic to benefit from Columbia's 10 years of experience and established sales channels."
Bell Atlantic Network Services Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Bell Atlantic Corporation (NYSE: BEL), which is based in Philadelphia. Bell Atlantic Corporation is also the parent company of New Jersey Bell, Bell of Pennsylvania, Diamond State Telephone (Delaware), and the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Companies of Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, D.C.
In addition, Bell Atlantic Corporation is the parent of one of the nation's largest cellular carriers and of companies that provide business systems services for customer-based information technology, including software, systems integration, hardware and software service and support, and financial services, throughout the United States and internationally. In addition, Bell Atlantic International offers network services and consulting to telephone authorities throughout the world and, in conjunction with Ameritech, owns a majority interest in Telecom Corporation of New Zealand.
