BELL ATLANTIC INTEGRATES DIGITIZED FULL-MOTION VIDEO
WITH ITS ELECTRONIC DOCUMENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
/ADVANCE/ ARLINGTON, Va., May 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Bell Atlantic demonstrated the integration of multi-media capabilities, including digitized full-motion video, with its Bell Atlantic DocuSource information management system at the INTEROP '92 Spring trade show in Washington. The multimedia capability that was demonstrated is now a customer option available with the Bell Atlantic DocuSource system.
Bell Atlantic used a camcorder to videotape INTEROP attendees. The videotape sequence was digitized and compressed using software developed by Massachusetts-based Fluent, Inc. It was then sent via Switched Multi-Megabit Data Service (SMDS) to a remotely located computer that functioned as a server to the DocuSource client terminal at INTEROP. The people demonstrating the DocuSource system continued to compile and revise the text using a graphical user interface and point-and-click mouse technology. When they wanted to insert the attendee's image, they simply clicked on an icon to retrieve the video clip from the server's memory.
Introduced by Bell Atlantic in 1991, the DocuSource document management system enables users to manage, convert and distribute large volumes of multi-media information. The documents (text, graphics, full-motion video, sound and animation) are then converted into "hypertext."
"Hypertext" refers to the technique for creating, marking and storing electronic documents in such a way that users can easily browse through on-line, interactive electronic libraries.
"With the addition of digitized full-motion video, Bell Atlantic's DocuSource system has made a quantum leap toward integrating multi-media document management over Local Area Networks (LANS), Wide Area Networks (WANS) and Metropolitan Area Networks (MANS)," said Jeff Beegle, Bell Atlantic DocuSource manager.
The DocuSource system's integration of multiple media in a networked environment enables organizations to assemble source materials in all types of formats in order to build their own unique applications in real time. In addition to text and graphics, now sound and video can be saved, retrieved, edited, copied, collated, revised and electronically distributed.
The DocuSource system's new multimedia capabilities are the result of a vendor/supplier relationship between Bell Atlantic and Fluent, Inc., which develops software products that integrate full- motion digital video and audio into networked computer applications.
Bell Atlantic's DocuSource system is priced on a modular basis and depends on the number of users. Prices range from $300 for a stand-alone, read-only system to $50,000 for a departmental multi-LAN deployment. The full-motion video module is priced at about $3,000.
