BELL ATLANTIC FAST FORWARDS FRAME RELAY; SERVICE TO BE AVAILABLE IN MOST METRO AREAS BY EARLY FALL

ARLINGTON, Va., Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Bell Atlantic is moving forward with plans to make its Frame Relay high-speed data service available in most metropolitan areas in the mid-Atlantic region by early fall.
The company's deployment plans are spurred by customer demand for Frame Relay Service, a highly efficient and cost-effective means of moving data along predetermined routes, such as among the various offices of a company.
Frame Relay Service is already under tariff in Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. Tariffs have been filed or are planned in the District of Columbia, Delaware, and New Jersey. In those jurisdictions where tariffs are not yet effective, the Bell Atlantic telephone companies are providing the service under individual arrangements in compliance with regulators.
Among other Bell Atlantic tests of the service, Cherry Hill, N.J.- based Commerce Bank is using Frame Relay to speed communications between its branch offices.
"We're achieving huge time savings using Frame Relay," said Jack R. Allison IV, assistant vice president of retail delivery systems for Commerce Bank. "Customer data is being transferred four times faster than before. That translates into higher customer satisfaction because customer transactions -- such as opening new accounts -- are being processed more quickly.
"I'm assuming that we'll earn back our initial investment in Frame Relay within 18 months," he added.
Allison praised Bell Atlantic's commitment to customer service. "I'm exceptionally pleased with my Bell Atlantic account team. There's no grass growing under their feet. They've made our project a reality," he said.
Bell Atlantic has also conducted an eight-week test of several Frame Relay applications with Public Service Electric and Gas (PSE&G), New Jersey's largest electric and gas utility.
According to Dave Lyons, PSE&G principal staff engineer, technical support from Bell Atlantic and its New Jersey Bell subsidiary was excellent throughout the trial. "I sensed that there's a true dedication on the part of Bell Atlantic to provide superior service at a reasonable cost to customers," he said.
PSE&G used Bell Atlantic Frame Relay Service to increase communications speed -- by five-fold -- between the company's remote locations and its central mainframe computer; to expand electronic mail capabilities by connecting remote local area networks, or LANs; and to transfer large drawings, schematics and maps from a central repository to remote locations.
Frame Relay is one of three high-speed -- or "fast packet" -- data services offered by Bell Atlantic's telephone companies. Bell Atlantic is the only company in the mid-Atlantic region to offer all three services: Frame Relay, Switched Multimegabit Data Service (SMDS), and Fiber Distributed Data Interface Network Service (FNS).
"Our approach is to define the individual customer's requirements first," said Mara Spaulder, Bell Atlantic manager of Broadband/WAN Product Development. "Then we develop a customized solution using the service or services that best fill the need."
Bell Atlantic Corporation (NYSE: BEL), based in Philadelphia, is the parent company of New Jersey Bell, Bell of Pennsylvania, Diamond State Telephone (Delaware), and the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Companies of Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C,. which provide a full array of telecommunications services in the mid-Atlantic region.

In addition, Bell Atlantic International offers network services and consulting to telephone authorities throughout the world and owns an interest in Telecom Corporation of New Zealand.
