 BELL ATLANTIC EXPANDS ALLIANCES
AIMED AT MARKETING ISDN BUSINESS APPLICATIONS
ARLINGTON, Va., Nov. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Bell Atlantic (NYSE: BEL) today announced formation of strategic alliances with five more telecommunications hardware and software applications providers for the joint marketing of Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) business applications.
Bell Atlantic's new alliance partners are: AT&T; Connective Strategies, Inc. (CSI); DigiBoard; NCR and IBM's Mid-Atlantic Area marketing and service group.
They join five companies that formed strategic alliances with Bell Atlantic last July to provide customers with total communications solutions using ISDN, an all-digital network that integrates voice, data and image services on a single telephone line.
The alliance partners will use joint sales calls with Bell Atlantic, trade shows, in-house demonstrations and other special events to market a variety of customer applications using Bell Atlantic ISDN links and ISDN-compatible hardware and software tools provided by the alliance partners.
Applications include electronic imaging, automatic call distribution, desktop video conferencing, collaborative computing and LAN access and interconnection.
"These companies add leading-edge expertise and a solid commitment to solving customers' business problems through the use of ISDN. We will continue to seek additional alliance partners who share this commitment to ISDN," said Myles Mendelsohn, assistant director-business development for Bell Atlantic Network Services, Inc.
AT&T, IBM and NCR are large, widely known companies with a major presence in a variety of markets and a wealth of experience in areas especially suited to ISDN solutions, including point of sale applications, interactive systems, and imaging and video conferencing systems.
CSI develops hardware and software products for business and government customers. Its ISDNAccelerator is being used by the U.S. Army to retrieve information, including drawings and photos, from centralized data files in seconds using the public telephone network.
DigiBoard, a division of Digi International, Inc., offers IMAC, an ISDN remote LAN connection that provides high-speed data transmission over both ISDN voice circuits and circuit-switched data connections and supports any operating system or application software running on Ethernet.
Mendelsohn said joint sales calls, trade show presentations and other promotional activities involving the first five alliance partners are stimulating customer interest in ISDN applications and already have resulted in some early sales success.
The initial alliance partners are Ascend Communications, Inc.; Gandalf Systems Corp.; Hitachi America Ltd.; Sun Microsystems, Inc.; and Unifi Communications Corp.
Bell Atlantic's local telephone companies have been equipping their switching offices with ISDN capability as part of an aggressive network modernization effort. Bell Atlantic expects to have ISDN available to nearly 50 percent of its customer base by the end of 1992 and to nearly 90 percent of its customer base by the end of 1994.
All of Bell Atlantic's local telephone companies have tariffs in place that make ISDN a standard option for Centrex customers.
Tariffs for single-line business (Basic Rate ISDN) and Primary Rate ISDN (for customers moving large amounts of information all the time) are scheduled to be filed by year's end.
The ISDN offerings are named Bell Atlantic IntelliLinQ BRI digital service for Basic Rate interface and Bell Atlantic IntelliLinQ PRI digital service for Primary Rate interface.
Bell Atlantic's ISDN deployment coincides with National ISDN-1, a movement by the nation's local telephone companies, interexchange carriers and hardware and software developers to set uniform ISDN specifications and to speed the deployment of ISDN services nationwide.
Bell Atlantic Corporation, based in Philadelphia, is the parent of New Jersey Bell, Bell of Pennsylvania, Diamond State Telephone (Delaware) and the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Companies serving Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, D.C.
Bell Atlantic is also the parent of companies that provide wireless communications in the mid-Atlantic region and business systems and services for customer-based information technology, including software, systems integration, hardware and software service, and support and financial services throughout the United States and internationally.
In addition, Bell Atlantic International offers network services and consulting to telephone authorities throughout the world and, in conjunction with Ameritech, owns a majority interest in Telecom Corporation of New Zealand.
