BELL ATLANTIC AND US ORDER SIGN AGREEMENT TO EXPLORE HOME SHOPPING
 AND BILL PAYING SERVICE
ARLINGTON, Va., April 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Bell Atlantic has signed an agreement with US Order of Herndon, Va., to explore opportunities for offering home shopping and home banking services using ScanFone telephone equipment.
ScanFone units enable customers to use a pen-sized bar code scanner and a major commercial credit card to order groceries and other products from catalogs. Consumers also can conduct home banking with the ScanFone unit, which is equipped with a standard telephone keypad and a 16-character LED display, as well as a lightpen scanner and a magnetic strip card reader.
"Bell Atlantic's assessment of customer requirements leads us to believe that the convenience of shopping and banking over the telephone will be attractive to the many families where both spouses work and to consumers with restricted mobility, such as many elderly or disabled people," said Rick White, Bell Atlantic assistant vice president for information services. "Our intent is to enable customers to perform everyday tasks, such as ordering a list of groceries for delivery, any time of the day, from the comfort of their home."
Under the agreement, Bell Atlantic and US Order will explore the feasibility of providing home grocery shopping and delivery through major supermarket chains, electronic bill payment through any U.S. bank and mail order shopping from national brand name catalog retailers. The two companies envision marketing these three services initially to consumers in the Washington metropolitan area and other select markets later this year. The services would be marketed under the Bell Atlantic name.
"US Order's ScanFone unit will provide consumers with an easy way to do time-consuming chores," said William F. Gorog, chief executive officer and chairman of the board of US Order. "With the marketing support of Bell Atlantic behind us, we're confident that the ScanFone equipment will gain tremendous exposure and acceptance in the mid-Atlantic region."
