BELL ATLANTIC AND NATIONAL CONSUMER WEEK -- BACKGROUND INFORMATION
 ARLINGTON, Va., Oct. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Richard Alston, vice president-marketing, Bell Atlantic Network Services, today issued the following statement on Bell Atlantic and National Consumer Week:
 Consumer standards are undergoing a revolution. America's world class telephone service and a myriad of other services and devices, such as personal computers, ATM machines and faxes, give people very fast, highly reliable delivery of what they want when they want it -- at affordable prices.
 Companies that want to stay in the lead have to recognize that customers are raising their expectations at an accelerating rate.
 At Bell Atlantic, voice recognition (see 10/28/92 release) is one aspect of a comprehensive strategy to meet these expectations and make every year the "Year of the Consumer" for the 11 million households and approximately 30 million people we serve.
 Our focus is on delighting our customers, by anticipating and meeting their requirements for products and services. Our goal is also to provide the reliable, convenient and friendly service that tells each customer he or she is our most important one.
 To this end, Bell Atlantic is committed to a quality program which permeates the farthest reaches of our business, so that every one of our employees is trained to be knowledgeable about our services, to ascertain the customer's needs and to meet them every time.
 This quality orientation is reflected in a number of initiatives Bell Atlantic's telephone companies have undertaken in 1992:
 -- "When do you want it service" -- customers can get installation on the day they request it rather than waiting several days;
 -- extension of the hours of many business offices to accommodate local customers' schedules;
 -- a product support center that gives customers one place to contact for information or instructions about any consumer service provided by the Bell Atlantic telephone companies (phone number: 800-338-3571 or 800-870-0000);
 -- new retail locations -- such as Sixth Avenue Electronics and Sterns in New Jersey, Office America in Virginia and Kmart in both Virginia and Maryland -- to give customers the convenience of "one- stop-shopping" for both telephone services and telephone equipment.
