BELL, GTE DATA SERVICES SIGN MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS ALLIANCE

BELL, GTE DATA SERVICES SIGN MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS ALLIANCE
TORONTO, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Bell Canada and GTE Data Services

Incorporated ("GTEDS") of Temple Terrace, Fla., today jointly announced they have entered into a strategic alliance to cooperatively develop, share and market telecommunications information management systems.
Under terms of the memorandum of understanding, the two companies will share and exchange data on telecommunications information systems solutions -- particularly in customer billing systems -- by providing resources in defining, developing, and testing new technologies.
"It is our intent to evolve the billing capabilities of both companies on an ongoing basis to meet the changing needs of our customers," said Robert Kearney, president and chief executive officer, Bell Canada.
The two companies also announced that Bell is acquiring a license to use GTE Data Services' Customer Billing Services System, known as CBSS, and GTE Data Services is acquiring Bell's software billing analysis system, BILL2000. Total value of the deal is approximately $40 million (Cdn.$).
The new CBSS billing system will give Bell customers more control over their telecommunications use and costs by providing a customer- defined, itemized bill rather than the current "bill by number" system. This will allow customers to receive one bill which details expenditures by office, by geographical region or by service.
The new table-driven software system also has the built-in architecture and flexibility needed to bring products and services to market faster. Designed to accommodate enhancements rapidly and more easily, CBSS will speed the introduction of new concepts such as spontaneous features activation or pay-for-use, for example.
Bell expects the new customized system to be operational for all of its customers on a phased rollout throughout 1994.
The strategic alliance also calls for Bell and GTE Data Services to undertake a study to analyze and evaluate existing and potential areas for cooperation in the global telecommunications market. Based on the analysis and recommendations of the study, Bell and GTE Data Services may decide to establish additional business relationship or relationships.
"GTE brings over eight years of competing successfully in a deregulated telecommunications market," said Mr. Kearney. "This information-sharing agreement will ensure not only that Bell continues its leadership position in the changing telecommunications market in Canada, but will also allow us to seize business opportunities by expanding our capabilities in the area of information management systems."
"This alliance brings two industry giants together to offer customers quality billing services," said Don. A. Hayes, president, GTE Data Services. "This is also the case where the combined efforts of 'the-best-of-the-best' represents the potential to explore opportunities for new, more powerful information management solutions for our customers and the telecommunications market as a whole."
GTE Data Services, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Stamford, Conn.- based GTE Corporation (NYSE: GTE), is one of the largest software development and information processing service companies in the United States. A part of GTE's Telephone Operations Group, its corporate headquarters is in Temple Terrace, Fla. GTE is the largest U.S.-based local telephone company and the fourth-largest publicly owned telecommunications company in the world.
Bell Canada, the largest Canadian telecommunications operating company, markets a full range of state-of-the-art products and services to more than seven million business and residence customers in Ontario and Quebec. Bell Canada is a member of Stentor -- an alliance of Canada's major telecommunications companies.
