BEILSTEIN INSTITUTE AND INFORMATION HANDLING SERVICES GROUP ANNOUNCE AGREEMENT ON INTERNATIONAL INFORMATION PARTNERSHIP

FRANKFURT, Germany/ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Dec. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Beilstein Institute and Information Handling Services Group (IHS Group), the information subsidiary of TBG are today announcing an agreement in principle on a major new international information partnership.
From Jan. 1, 1994, a new joint venture company, Beilstein Information Systems GmbH, will combine Beilstein's longstanding reputation and experience as the world authority in organic chemical information with the database manufacturing and distribution skills of IHS Group, the world's leading engineering and technical information company.
The Beilstein Handbook of Organic Chemistry will continue to be produced by Beilstein Institute under contract with Beilstein Information Systems GmbH. All current orders and subscription obligations of Beilstein customers will be assumed by Beilstein Information Systems GmbH.
Based in Frankfurt, Beilstein Information Systems GmbH will develop, market and support sophisticated chemical databases and information management systems for research and development scientists and information specialists in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries and academia. The Beilstein database is the world's largest collection of validated information on organic compounds, chemical properties and reactions. XFIRE (Crossfire), a revolutionary client-server storage, retrieval and research system for large chemical databases is scheduled for release in early 1994.
The concept of an electronic "pool" of chemical information and software will provide customers with a unique combination of media- independent products from one source at economical subscription pricing. Handbook subscribers will benefit from lower prices and the opportunity for discounts on products on other media.
Heinrich Thyssen, the chairman of TBG, is "proud that TBG has been chosen by Beilstein to help develop and support its next generation of database and software products." Mike Timbers, president and chief executive officer of IHS Group, feels that "the combination of the strengths of IHS Group and Beilstein Institute will provide a winning formula in a marketplace which demands increasingly sophisticated information products and software." Prof. Dr. Reiner Luckenbach, who will continue to head Beilstein Institute, is "delighted that its partnership with IHS Group will enable Beilstein to further its reputation of excellence in producing chemical information."
Prof. Dr. Clemens Jochum, previous managing director of the Computing and Database Division of Beilstein Institute and Dr. Albert Post, previous chief financial officer of Beilstein Institute will be managing directors of Beilstein Information Systems GmbH.
