BEI REPORTS RECORD SALES, INCREASED EARNINGS FOR 2nd QUARTER
AND 1st HALF OF FISCAL 1992; FIRST HALF EARNINGS UP 42 PERCENT
SAN FRANCISCO, May 6 /PRNewswire/ -- BEI Electronics Inc. (NASDAQ: BEII), a San Francisco-based diversified technology company, today reported record sales and increased earnings for the second quarter and first six months of fiscal 1992 ended March 28.
In making the announcement, Peter G. Paraskos, president and chief executive officer, said that second quarter sales increased 11 percent to $41,189,000 from the $37,085,000 posted in the same period of fiscal 1991. Net income was $1,710,000, up 26 percent from the $1,355,000 reported for the second quarter of the prior year. Earnings per share were $0.25 in the second quarter of fiscal 1992 as compared to $0.20 recorded in the second quarter of fiscal 1991, an increase of 25 percent.
For the first six months of fiscal 1992 sales were a record $75,214,000, up 11 percent from the $67,820,000 reported in the prior year. Net income increased 42 percent to $2,726,000 from the $1,923,000 posted in the same period of fiscal 1991. Earnings per share were $0.40 in the first six months of fiscal 1992 as compared to the $0.29 reported in the first six months of fiscal 1991, an increase of 38 percent.
"The results of the second quarter and the first half of fiscal 1992 reflect increased sales of defense systems HYDRA-70 rocket motors, warheads and components overcoming last year's technical and financial problems at U.S. Government designated suppliers. It also reflects a one-time technology licensing fee from one of BEI's contracts with Rockwell International Corp.," Paraskos said.
"Earlier this month BEI was awarded A $47.6 million contract by the U.S. Army to be the prime system contractor for the HYDRA-70 rocket system placing the company in an excellent position for future domestic and international sales," he added.
Paraskos also stated that BEI and Rockwell International Corp. agreed to co-develop an advanced inertial sensor assembly (ISA) using BEI's patented quartz technology. BEI will manufacture the co- developed ISA for use by both companies in their respective higher- level products including inertial measurement units (IMU). According to Paraskos, "this multi-million dollar co-development effort, utilizing BEI's unique quartz technology, further reinforces the market potential for quartz rate sensors, accelerometers and inertial measurement units."
BEI Electronics designs, manufactures and markets a wide variety of sensors and control systems and components for use in commercial, industrial, medical, military and aerospace applications, in addition to defense ordnance and systems. For fiscal 1991 BEI reported sales of $146 million. The company has major operations in California, Arkansas, Texas and Massachusetts.
