BEI ELECTRONICS WINS $48 MILLION HYDRA-70 ROCKET SYSTEM CONTRACT
SAN FRANCISCO, April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- BEI Electronics Inc. (NASDAQ: BEII), a San Francisco-based diversified technology company, today announced that its subsidiary BEI Defense Systems Co. is being awarded a $47.6 million contract by the U.S. Army Armament, Munitions and Chemical Command (AMCCOM) to be the prime system contractor for the 2.75 inch (70 mm) HYDRA-70 Rocket System.
The HYDRA-70 Rocket System integration program contract calls for the production of the MK66 HYDRA-70 rocket motor and a variety of warheads. In addition to the basic contract, the award provides for three one-year options to purchase additional HYDRA-70 Rocket Systems which can be exercised in fiscal years 1993, 1994 and 1995.
To win this contract, BEI Defense Systems teamed with Thiokol Corp. and Accudyne Corp. The BEI team is the sole producer of the HYDRA-70 Rocket System.
BEI Defense Systems Co., headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, supplies rocket motors, combat and training warheads, electronic fire control and armament systems, field support and special ordnance components to the U.S. Department of Defense and its allies throughout the world. At approximately one-tenth the cost of a guided missile, the HYDRA-70 Rocket System is a highly reliable, powerful, yet affordable, ordnance system that can be adapted to meet most battlefield mission requirements. Its modular design permits a custom fit on a variety of airborne, seaborne or ground launch weapons platforms. The HYDRA-70 Rocket System was used by all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces during Operation Desert Storm where it proved to be extremely effective.
BEI Electronics designs, manufactures and markets a wide variety of sensors and control systems and components for use in commercial, industrial, medical, military and aerospace applications as well as defense ordnance. For fiscal 1991 BEI reported sales of $146 million. The company has major operations in California, Arkansas, Texas and Massachusetts.
