BEI ELECTRONICS ACQUIRES ZINNANTI SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS; EXPANDS MEDICAL SYSTEMS CAPABILITY

SAN FRANCISCO, March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- BEI Electronics, Inc. (NASDAQ: BEII), has expanded its medical systems capabilities with the acquisition of Zinnanti Surgical, Inc. ("ZSI"), a privately held marketer of products for minimally invasive surgery, headquartered in Chatsworth, Calif., it was announced today by Peter G. Paraskos, president and chief executive officer of BEI. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
"ZSI has focused its product line on the fields of obstetrics and gynecology," Paraskos said, "two medical disciplines where we see continued steady growth. The addition of ZSI in our medical systems division further validates our commitment to growth through the strategic expansion of our medical business.
"Coupled with our existing Meditron operations, acquired in June 192, and our strengths in the advanced electronic technologies pioneered by BEI's aerospace and defense divisions, we see synergies with ZSI's product line and research and development expertise that will enable us to maximize ZSI's full business potential," Paraskos said.
"The combined strengths of these three resources should further enhance and accelerate our position in the design and development of advanced, cost-effective high-technology medical systems," he said.
Meditron Devices has successfully developed a group of electrosurgical systems and single-patient usage devices to assist in the minimally invasive surgical treatment of various gastrointestinal and related organ disorders.
BEI designs, manufactures and markets a wide variety of specialized sensors, motors, control systems and components for use in other medical, industrial, military and aerospace applications, as well as defense ordnance and systems. BEI had sales of $157 million in its fiscal year ended Oct. 3, 1992.
