BEER HUNTER Arfur Daley.

Marks & Spencer Black Pale Ale, 4.1% ABV/330ml can, brewed by Meantime Brewery, Greenwich. MEANTIME Brewery was founded in 2000 and was acquired in 2015 by SAB Miller, originally a South African brewery, but was sold to the Japanese brewers Asahi in 2016.

Black Pale Ale, is jet-black in colour with a reddish hue and pours with a light beige head that remains on the beer throughout drinking.

Chocolate and black treacle are in the aroma. Smooth, velvety taste with a hint of chocolate that is soon superseded by a piney flavour, that is again replaced by bitter coffee flavour. The bitter coffee flavour lingers in the mouth for a while after drinking, giving a somewhat astringent aftertaste.

An unusual beer, something of a contradiction being a Black Pale Ale, but an enjoyable contradiction nonetheless.
