BECTON DICKINSON SCIENTISTS REPORT MAJOR BREAKTHROUGH IN SINGLE-CELL ANALYSIS

 SAN JOSE, Calif., April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- At a recent presentation before the American Society of Hematology (ASH) in Anaheim, Calif., and later in an article in the December 31st issue of Nature, Drs. Leon Terstappen and Shiang Huang of Becton Dickinson's Immunocytometry Systems (BDIS) reported the identification and isolation of single cells capable of giving rise to the progenitors of all blood cells as well as cells that compose the bone marrow environment. This was the first reported identification of the formation of the haematopoietic microenvironment and haematopietic stem cells arising from a single human bone marrow stem cell. This was a technological breakthrough as well as an important discovery for future clinical applications.
 The clinical implications include the future development of diagnostic, therapeutic and monitoring tools for malignancies of the haemaatopoietic system, as well as the advancement of stem cell and gene therapy.
 Huang and Terstappen were able to conduct this research because of the ability of Becton Dickinson's flow cytometry systems and software to sort, isolate, and analyze single cells. The FACStar PLUS(TM) was used to identify cells of interest and the Automatic Cell Deposition Unit sorted individual cells into microtiter trays for culture and further study. The pulse processing feature of FACStar PLUS was used to eliminate doublets and aggregates and multidimensional analysis was performed using PAINT-A-GATE PLUS(TM) software. Becton Dickinson's flow cytometry systems are the only systems available today that can perform the single-cell sorting needed in this type of scientific breakthrough.
 Leon Terstappen, MD, PhD is an associate scientific director at Becton Dickinson Immunocytometry Systems and is responsible for BDIS' laboratories for experimental hematology, molecular genetics, genetic disease, and new product development. He received his PhD in applied physics at Twente University in Enschede, The Netherlands. He received his MD from Groningen University Medical School in The Netherlands. He holds several patents in the cellular analysis field and has published over 50 papers. He currently resides in Palo Alto, Calif.
 Shiang Huang, MD, is a research scientist at Becton Dickinson Immunocytometry Systems and is currently working in the Experimental Hematology Group under Leon Terstappen. He received his MD at Tongji Medical University in Wuhan, China. He has published several papers regarding leukemia and human bone marrow. He currently resides in Sunnyvale, Calif.
